USITT Expo 2012 special offer

How do I place an order?

KNIVES for rent

[Rental prices below are for the first 30 days.]

Photos are to illustrate guard only. Grip and pommel will change with each order

Do you need only the knife, or some way to attach it to the actor as well? Once you're done selecting the hilt and blade, take a look at our  leather goods  rental section, which has sashes, belts, frogs and scabbards

sorry, we do not have the blood razor for "Sweeny Todd", but - J&M Special Effects now makes a good line of blood knives, including the Sweeney Todd razors

measurements listed are for blade length only - not overall size

    369 – HUNTER – 6" - as shown – [$6.74]

368 – HUNTER- 5" - small single edge knives have been around for ages. This bone-handled version since the 1700’s; blade = 5"; as shown – [$6.74]

322 – NAZI DAGGER – 9" blade - Based on the medieval Swiss baselard dagger.  prop only – [$10.11]

355 – JOHNNY CORKSCREW – only one available, wavy blade, costume grade only. The blade is 10", and the knife is 16" overall - [$21.25]

376 - LOCKBACK FOLDING KNIFE   – the exposed blade is one inch wide and 4 inches long. Locks open very securely.  [$5.00 each]

    377 – LARGE FOLDING KNIFE – a great big 7" wavy blade. limited availability – [$6.74]

377 – LARGE FOLDER – same as above, but a straight blade. limited availability – [$6.74]

    397 – ARKANSAS TOOTHPICK – a very menacing 12" blade. – [$14.74]

357 – HANWEI STILETTO – costume grade only, the stiletto was a close-in single thrust killing weapon popular throughout Europe in the Renaissance and beyond. 10" steel blade. – [$20.00]

326- EAGLE - [very limited availability] another small guard, but very weak blade (10"). costume – [$10.11]

353 - MARAUDER - the style probably originated among Turkish sailors, but was adapted by pirates and privateers in the Caribbean. Strong blade = 12" as shown – [$10.95]

320 - ARABIAN - engraved grip. blade = 6" to 10"; blade shape and length may differ; limited availability; dress/costume only – [$11.16]

    662 - PERSIAN - only two available; blade = 10"; a sturdy dagger – [$25.89]

394 - BOWIE - "Bowie" has become a generic title given to several knife styles which have very little in common with each other. No one can say for sure what the first one looked like, but all shared the same characteristics of being big, single edged, and meant for gutting a human being. Here are some variations. – [$13.26]

379 – "SWITCHBLADE" – real switchblade knives are illegal in the United States. The best we can do is to take the novelty comb, remove the plastic and add a weak 4" aluminum blade. They don’t last long, so we only offer them for sale only, not rent. (If you are doing Twelve Angry Men, I'm sorry to tell you that these are too fragile to stick into a table top ... or balsa wood ... or even into Styrofoam.)  The only plus side here is that they look and operate just like the real thing. [$6.40] sales price

[for information on how to keep these working a little longer, click this link]

380 – GRAVITY KNIFE – Also called a "flick knife", it is not spring loaded. Instead, a button on the edge of the handle releases the blade, which can then drop down or pop out with the flick of the wrist (hence the nickname). This kind of knife must not be dropped, for the release button can be easily damaged. It is not a switchblade, but in California we can't get any more of them, and we only have a few left. Reserve it early. – [$12.21]

older styles

390- TANTO - fighting dagger of the samurai. Contrary to popular myth, it's primary function was not for the rare ritual suicide known as seppuku [hara kiri]; costume – [$12.21]

392 - KWAIKEN - The kwaiken was a woman’s knife of Japan. Not meant for fighting, but only for one version of seppuku. The blade could be either single or double edged, and the weapon was not meant for self-disemboweling, but rather to slit the wrist and neck veins to allow one to slowly pass out before death.    costume, single edged, no two are alike – [$12.21]

361- BONNY SCOTTISH DIRK - a large weapon with an almost prehistoric look, it is the evolution of the ballock, and still part of the highlander’s dress uniform. – [$14.74]

small knives

381 – BUTTERFLY KNIFE – with a little practice, opens flashily with one hand [although it can rap your knuckles]. Also limited availability because of restrictions in California. – [$7.00]

Y77 - BARBER’S STROP - rhymes with "hope", yes this is the leather strap to hone the straight razor. [$6.00]

371- ROSALINE - trim "woman’s" dagger; 6" blade, 10" overall. This one works rather well for a "boot" dagger. – [$9.05]

365 - PUNCH/STRAIGHT COMBO KNIFE – this is a folding knife that only folds half-way, turning from a standard utility knife to a punching dagger –  3" blade.  [$2.53]

370 – BOOT DAGGER - (no image available, because there is really no such animal) blade length varies, but usually about 3". Everyone believes that a boot dagger is going to be a really cool addition to a show, but boot daggers are very small (so they won't rub against the ankle) and when held by actors are nearly invisible to the audience (it looks like the character is just pointing angrily.) -

Helpful hint: If you have been told that it is absolutely critical to the show to have a boot dagger, do two things before ordering. 1) go to the costumer and find out what the maximum overall knife length can be. In other words, how much space do you have to house the knife. Then 2) take a ruler onstage and show the director what different blade lengths look like when stuck out of someone's hand. This way you'll find out the minimum blade length the director can be happy with. Somewhere between this minimum blade length and maximum overall length is the info you need to place the order. We'll try to put something together that falls within your request.
